Trades HallSarah Kaine on the Workers Support Register
Labor Council's organising coordinator on how ordinary people are joining the union cause.
On Saturday 13 May 2000, thirteen committed unionists and supporters of the trade union movement came together for the second in a series of seminars for members of the Workers Support Register. The Workers Support Register is open to people either in a union, or supporters of unions, who are prepared to assist with organising for the protection and betterment of the lives of working people in New South Wales. The register currently lists over 300 volunteers from unions and the wider community who are prepared to become involved by writing letters, attending peaceful protests and leafleting. The seminars provide an opportunity for those volunteers to find out about current campaigns and issues affecting workers and how they can help. Saturday's seminar covered: the state of our unions; workers entitlements; and jobs with justice. The participants came from a variety of backgrounds and union experiences. Some of them had no union experience, only support for the cause and an empathy with workers experiencing hardship. The seminar was a great success. It was invigorating to be with people who were prepared to give up two hours on a Saturday to consider how we could expand and progress. I can't wait for the next one. If you want to become part of the Workers Support Register please contact our Unions NSW Organising Centre on 1800 688 919 for an application form or go to the LaborNet website.
