NewsBeer Hike Sparks Worker Concerns
News that beer prices will rise by nine per cent under the GST has raised concern about the jobs impact in clubs, pubs and hotels as well as the effect on millions of ordinary workers.
Liquor, Hospitality and Miscellaneous Workers Union state secretary Sue McGrath says the hike - way above the original projection of 1.9 per cent - has enormous implications for hospitality workers. "The industry is already struggling to survive changes to gaming laws, an increase in gaming taxes and declining patronage," McGrath says. "If the Government is successful in forcing beer prices to increase it will cost our members their jobs while further eroding their income levels and financial security." The LHMU is calling for a campaign against the price rises - with the backing of the Transport Workers Union which represents beer carters. TWU state secretary Tony Sheldon says the attack on "the people's drink" and should be resisted. The campaign, which has the backing of the NSW Labor Council, will involve petitions, mass meetings and rallies over the coming weeks.
