NewsAngry Truckies Converge on Border
Pressure is building on trucking employers over hours and rates with hundreds of drivers heading to Albury to block the Hume Highway in support of their claim.
More than 200 trucks, covering three kilometers of highway, are already in place at the border town and many more are expected to arrive over the weekend amidst talk of a blockade of the Hume Highway. The action is being coordinated by a committee of both union and non-union long distance drivers with the support of the Transport Workers Union. "The drivers are parking their trucks on the highway and calling on the rest of the industry to pull up and support them," TWU state secretary Tony Sheldon says. "The clear message from drivers is that the time for action for better rates and shorterhours has well and truly arrived.". Sheldon told the weekly Labor Council meeting the action reflects growing anger at the demands being placed on long-haul drivers - many of whom must take drugs to meet their targets. He says companies are currently pushing down payments and the drivers are unapologetic about commencing pattern bargaining in the industry. The key demands are: - immediately increase rates of pay - introduce a system of enforceable minimum rates - introduce a system of compulsory payments within 14 days - and introduce a compulsory licensing system for all industry, clients,. Loading agents, companies and operators. The campaign is gathering momentum with 200 drivers joining the TWU in the past week alone.
