NewsRadio Free East Timor Rocks
Dili's only radio station has gone from broadcasting two hours a day with a used tape deck to a fully fledged studio offering a comprehensive service to the people of East Timor, thanks to support from Australian workers.
Today, scores of fans hover outside the station, which broadcasts music, news and information, 16 hours per day. APHEDA - Union Aid Abroad project officer Alison Tate reported back on the progress of Voz de Esperanza as she received a cheque for more than $6000 from NSW unions. The money - along with 2.000 CD, was raised a two fundraising gigs organized by the CFMEU, LHMU and NSW Labor Council. CFMEU's Phil Davey presented the cheque to APHEDA, telling the Council the gigs - both full houses - had introduced hundreds of young people to the union movement. Davey said CDs had come from as far away as Hong Kong and Austen, Texas, highlighting the reach of Internet promotions.
