NewsBasic Goods Sought for East TimoreseBy Phil Davey
The National Council of Timorese Resistance (CNRT) has a warehouse now in Marrickville, which is receiving donated goods for East Timor.
Kim Gago, Sydney representative of CNRT has called on Australian unionists to continue donations as the situation on the ground in Timor remains critical. "The need is still there, we are better organised now and can transport and place appropriately goods where they are most needed. Nothing is too small or big". Key items required include: - vegetable seeds - packaged dried fruits - soaps - toothpaste - shoes (open sandal type) - clothes (ideally cotton) - socks and undies - exercise books - pens, pencils - blackboard paint, chalk - mosquito nets and coils, insect repellent - mousetraps, rat traps - shampoo for head lice - tools (hammers, nails, hoes, forks) There are also specific requests for items to help rebuild local industry including: - sewing machines (treadle types as some areas don't have electricity) - a coffee grinding machine - a vacuum packing machine for coffee - a gasless mig welder - fishing equipment (hooks, sinkers) - an AM/FM radio capable of receiving shortwave. The CNRT is the official representative body of all Timorese. Commander Xanana Gusmao is the head of CNRT. Marrickville CNRT warehouse is at 8/11 Gordon Streeet (not Gordon Square) Marrickville.
