NewsAuditor General Moves on TAFE
The NSW Auditor-General is reviewing of the entire TAFE system amidst concern the closure Seaforth TAFE is a sign of broader mismanagement.
The investigation comes as a picket outside the threatened college enters its third month, with defiant teachers refusing to accept a government decision to reject the recommendations of a NSW upper House Inquiry. Independent Manly MP David Barr has welcomed the inquiry as a chance to further expose the folly of the decision to close Seaforth and transfer services to Brookvale. "The Northern Institute closed Seaforth TAFE supposedly to save money, yet vast amounts have been wasted on, and by, a bloated bureaucracy," Barr says. "Any savings from the Seaforth closure are paltry in comparison with the amount of savings that could be available elsewhere." Barr says an independent economic analysis of the Seaforth TAFE closure, by Centennial Consultancy, shows major flaws in TAFE's own economic appraisals of the closure - which kit says will save $240,000. The NSW Labor Council and individual affiliates have backed the Seaforth TAFE teachers and has called on the Education Minister John Acquilina to personally intervene.
