NewsUnrest Bubbles Over Coke Sackings
Filipino workers are seeking support from consumers of the world after the snap sackings of 500 Coca Cola workers just before Christmas.
The workers were sacked without notice after Coca-Cola Amatil decided to summarily close two factories, without any consultation with workers. "Coca Cola has treated their own agreement with contempt in a classic example of corporate arrogance by a major global corporation," International Union of Food (IUF) Asia/Pacific Regional Secretary Ma Wei Pin told Workers Online. "It is this corporate arrogance that is becoming the focus of so much critical attention world-wide amongst consumers and many, many other groups," he said. The IUF is calling on consumers around the world to write to Coca Cola's local branches and tell them of your disgust at the sackings and call on the company to talk the workers in the Philippines. Their Australian manager director is David Kennedy who can be faxed on 02 9259 6626
