NewsRail Workers Win Maintenance Security
In a major job security breakthrough for rail workers, Transport Minister Carl Scully has guaranteed that he won't outsource maintenance of the state's trains. Members of the Rail, Tram and Bus Union had feared that their jobs were under threat as the government moved to purchase "rolling stock" - that is, the trains and carriages - from private companies. They initially intended to offer the private sector contracts for both supply and maintenance of the trains - meaning the outsourcing of 1,000 public sector jobs. But after talks brokered by the NSW Labor Council, the Minister has undertaken that all future contracts will be for purchase only, and that the SRA workshops will get all the maintenace work. RTBU state secretary Nick Lewocki paid tribute to both Transport Minister Scully and Labor Council's Michael Gadiel for the decision to "support for long-term job security for rail workers and their families."
