NewsHow the Voting Works
A battle over control of radio station 2KY during the Lang era makes it extremely difficult for the Labor Council to divest itself of assets.
In attempting to protect the station back in the 1930s, the Labor Council has set a two stage hurdle for any sale or lease of assets. First, a proposal must get 75 per cent support of all eligible delegates in the open meeting. Secondly, any seven affiliates can veto a change to assets, by lodging an objection at the vote. With about 100 affiliates, this means Labor Council needs the support of 93 per cent of affiliates. After the first vote is passed, the decision must be endorsed by another meeting, not less than four weeks and not greater than six weeks from the original vote.
