The Story So Far ...

Corporate Renaissance approached the Labor Council with the Currawong proposal more than two years ago, initailly to purchase the site.

After exhaustive negotiations, the current proposal was devise to minimise the impact on existing.

The group's Transcendental Meditation tenats place a premium on the eastern aspect which Currawong enjoys, this means they are prepared to pay above market value for access to the site.

In late 1998 Labor Council took the proposal to the Currawong Committee, which had been overseeing the property for several years while it operated at a loss.

Further changes were made to deal with concerns such as union acess, the environmental impact and the uses that the site would be put to.

A meeting of Labor Council in November resolved to give the Friends of Currawong three months to come up with an alternate proposal; with a committee to get an independent assessement of the two proposals..

That assessment has now been completed, and the Corporate Renaissance proposal will be put forward as the preferred option.

Full Resolution:

We note the proposal from Corporate Renaissance to redevelop Currawong. The redevelopment is clearly controversial within the memberships of some unions.

However the Council believes that given the need to operate in an increasingly hostile environment all our resources must be fully utilized and that emphasis must be placed on using those resources to build growth in union membership. One of the essential tools in that strategy is the ability to deliver education to union officials and provide funds for specific strategically important organizing projects.

Accordingly, Council resolves to reconsider the proposal to redevelop Currawong in three months time. The decision will be evaluated in the light of the following criteria:

Guaranteed income to the Labor Council for use in organizing projects

Provision of a high standard of accommodation at an affordable price for the use of TUTA in its residential training program

 Cost

 Control and Management Structure

 Environmental Safeguards

General support to the Trade Union Movement

Subject to the preceding criteria, continued access to union members for recreational purposes

In addition Labor Council calls upon any interested affiliates or organizations to develop and put forward alternative development proposals framed within the above criteria within the next three months .

A sub-committee of Labor Council involving the Secretary, the President and Vice Presidents be empowered to evaluate all proposals put forward and to report back to the February 1999 meeting of Labor Council.
