NewsLabor Council to Vote on Currawong Proposal
The Labor Council of NSW will next week vote on a proposal to enter a 35-year lease to jointly run its Pittwater property Currawong.
The vote will be held on Thrusday, April 8pm at the Council's weekly meeting. Under the proposal Labor Council would lease the site to Corporate Renaissance, to jointly run the site and refocus its activities on training. The company would spend more than $5 million developing an eco-friendly training facility and accommodation, to which union members and the Trade Union Training Authority would retain access. Together with the joint usage, the Labor Council would receive $200,000 per annum, indexed for 35 years. After this time the asset would revert wholly to Labor Council. NSW Labor Council secretary Michael Costa said the vote was an important test of the movement's desire to survive into the 21st century. "The union movement is in crisis and we need imaginative solutions to guarantee our future," he said. "This deal will provide an important income stream to actively recruit new members, provide the sort of home that TUTA deserves to train officials and delegates as well as maintaining access for unionists for recreational use." Key aspects of the deal are: - Corporate Renaissance to spend $5-$8 million upgrading facilities, including the construction of 16 "Lombok-style" cottages. - TUTA and rank and file trade unionists to maintain access to Currawong via 5,500 room-nights each year. - Corporate Renaissance to use the facilities to run TM courses. There is no be no political activity linked to the Natural Law Party on the site. - Labor Council to receive $200,000 in rent per annum, indexed for 35 years. - After this time, the entire facility reverts to the Labor Council.
