Laboring for Education

Just prior to the NSW state election, the Eastern Suburbs Teachers' Association (a brach of NSWTF), as part of their Annual General Meeting, invited representatives from the major parties to address the meeting and answer questions on education policy matters and industrial relations.

Representatives from the Liberals, Democrats, and Greens attended and gave their views to the meeting. Unfortunately, no representative from the Labor Party attended or gave apologies for any reason. This looked particularly bad. There seems to be an unhealthy smugness developing in Labor's attitude to public education.

They have won the election comfortably, so what should we expect now? Prior to the election they would not discuss a new enterprise agreement, even though the existing teachers EA will expire in June, '99. The Teachers Federation attempted to get some assurances on the state wide staffing issue and this too met with disappointment.

Will the new Carr government formulate policies after consultation with the Teachers Federation, P&C and FOSCO or will they continue their knee-jerk reactionary treatment of serious education issues with policy by press release? The next few months will be very interesting.
