NewsUnionists take to Streets for May Day 2000By Paul Howse
In the wake of violent demonstrations around the world on May Day, Sydney trade unionists last Sunday celebrated May Day in a more traditional way by holding a march and rally.
In a first for May Day, officials from the Labor Council of NSW lead the 2500 strong march which featured participation from a broad range of unions and community organisations. NSW Australian Workers Union Secretary Russ Collision in addressing the rally called for greater participation by unions in May Day by stressing the importance of unity between unions no matter what their factional background may be. Sally McManus an Organiser for the Australian Services Union (NSW & ACT Services Division) spoke to the rally about the need for unions to focus on recruiting young workers into the unions especially in new and emerging economies and sited the example of the recruitment drive at the Star City Casino by the LHMU of places were unions need to be focusing. Other speakers included Greens MLC Lee Rihanon who applauded the NSW Teachers Federation for standing strong in their ongoing dispute with the NSW State Government over pay and conditions and a representative of the Movement for Democratic Change in Zimbabwe who reported to the rally on the oppression being suffered by unionists in Zimbabwe under Mugabe.
