NewsCharges to be Laid Over Gretley Disaster
NSW Attorney General Jeff Shaw has announced that charges will be laid over the death of four workers at Gretley Colliery in 1996.
Shaw says the charges will be laid under the Occupational Health and Safety Act - in what is a first for the mining industry. Shaw says he won't comment on any details of the criminal charges so as not to prejudice the case in any way, except to say "the government is determined to see that justice is done". The Gretley disaster occurred at about 5.30am on November 14, 1996, when four miners drowned after water swept into the mine from abandoned workings. The deaths were the subject of an inquiry by Judge Staunton, QC, last year, which produced a 900 page report recommending criminal charges be laid.
