NewsOne Hundred Strike Over Crane Accident
Over one hundred building workers this week walked off the job over the risk to public and worker safety caused by the spectacular crane accident on the Bovis building site at St Leonards. The workers -from the building site where the accident occurred -have endorsed the CFMEU's call for better safety standards and demanded that the Howard Governments Royal Commission into the building industry include occupational health and safety in its terms of reference. Mr Abbot has refused to date to include safety in the terms of reference for the Royal Commission A four tonne, 15-meter long tower crane "A" frame collapsed onto an occupied car on a public road at peak hour this morning. The CFMEU has placed a ban on erection and dismantling of tower cranes in Sydney until problems identified in this latest accident are addressed. Professor Denise Else, Chairperson of the National Health and Safety Council has supported the call for a national review of safety in the construction industry and has urged the Federal Government to act on that advice. According to CFMEU State Secretary Andrew Ferguson the construction industry is a death trap. The only way to reduce the horrific number of deaths and serious accidents is for the Federal Government to be serious and stop covering up the problem. The Liberal Government Royal Commission will cost the Australian taxpayers over $60 million. In light of this "It is more than reasonable that real issues and in particular safety and protection for ordinary building workers and the public be included in the Terms of Reference."
