NewsNew Partnership for Sustainable Energy Industry
Unions have been invited to participate in a ground-breaking study into the economic opportunities in developing a sustainable energy industry in NSW. The project, proposed by the Sustainable Energy Development Authority (SEDA) would chart the feasibility and benefits of establishing manufacturing operations in NSW in renewable energy projects such as wind farms, solar generation and biomass projects. SEDA chief executive Mark Fogarty says the renewable energy industry is currently growing faster than either the IT or biotechnology industries. "It is on this bases that SEDA seeks input from the Labor Council and its affiliates in maximizing the benefits of this new industry." The study would: - assess the feasibility of local manufacturing given our labour, infrastructure and transport capabilities. - examine the market drivers and implications of a local manufacturing capability. - estimate the employment and investment benefits to NSW which would be generated under certain scenarios. - and discuss existing barriers to local manufacturing, and the part which SEDA and NSW Labor Council can play to remove the barriers and accelerate the establishment of local manufacturing. Labor Council assistant secretary Mark Lennon says the sustainable energy industry was a potential creator of manufacturing jobs that should be embraced. Labor Council will appoint three representatives to the feasibility study' steering committee.
