NewsAnsett Battle Moves to Top End of Town
The focus of the campaign to save Ansett will move to the nation's top decision-makers with delegations of workers seeking government and corporate commitments to transfer business to the stricken carrier. Ansett workers have commenced a series of meetings with CEOs of major companies and leaders of all levels of government to secure a short-term base for the Ansett Mark II venture. They are asking them to place all travel contracts with Ansett Mk II for the next three months, to help it regain it's feet, arguing that the airline's success will ensure competition in the domestic air market, keeping prices down in the long-term. In support of this campaign: - flight attendants addressed mass meeting of building workers, who voted to ask major building companies to fly with Ansett. - delegations of pilots and senior cabin crews will meet with major corporate clients of Ansett asking them to remain loyal. - the NSW Labor Council will officially ask the Carr Government to flow the lead of the Bracks Government in Victoria and book all official travel through Ansett. - the Transport Workers Unions is urging the Road Transport Association to encourage its members to use Ansett freight services. - and the Municipal Employees Union has called on all local governments to support Ansett in both interstate and intrastate travel, wherever routes are available. NSW Labor Council assistant secretary Mark Lennon says the long-term future of Ansett now lies in the short-term support for its services by its major clients. "I would think it is in every business's long-term interest to have a strong Ansett putting pressure on the other carriers to keep domestic air prices down," Lennon says.
