NewsAnsett Workers Hit the Hustings
Displaced Ansett workers have commenced a grassroots campaign to maintain pressure on the Howard Government to protect their future. With the federal election campaign now underway, Ansett workers have resolved to get involved in the election campaign over its failure to show leadership over the airline's collapse. They will this weekend letterbox households in Liberal-held marginal seats across western Sydney, with an open letter signed by three Ansett families. Households are being asked to support the workers and Ansett by displaying a sticker bearing the message 'Save Ansett, Mr Howard'. The political action, the first ever undertaken by many of the Ansett workers, drew fire from Workplace Relations minister Tony Abbott who dismissed them as being 'political pawns'. In an extraordinary press conference called this week, Abbott accused unions - and Workers Online - of exploiting the Ansett workers for political purposes. But the workers involved in the campaign have rejected Abbott's claims. "I'm doing this because I believe the Prime Minister has let us down and should be called to account," Tracie Hanns, who features in the open letter, told Workers Online.
